نظرة عامة

The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Program enables American participants to engage in a nine-month academic exchange in Jordan, where they support English language teaching while gaining professional, cultural, and educational experience. During the academic year, ETAs work alongside local educators in Jordanian schools, universities, and non-profit organizations, contributing to classroom instruction and academic activities.

Jordanian schools, universities, NGOs, INGOs, and other educational institutions may participate in the program by hosting an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) for one academic year. All ETAs hold at least a bachelor’s degree and have a minimum of two years of classroom teaching experience.

Beyond their instructional role, ETAs serve as informal cultural ambassadors, sharing firsthand knowledge of American culture, traditions, and society. Through daily engagement with students, faculty, and communities, the program fosters meaningful cross-cultural exchange and strengthens mutual understanding between the peoples of Jordan and the United States.

الأهلية

Institutions eligible to apply include public and private schools, universities, non-profit NGOs and INGOs, or other educational institutions across Jordan. All Fulbright programs aim to achieve balanced geographic distribution across Jordan.

Host institutions must demonstrate a commitment to English language education and have the ability to provide a supervising English language teacher or supervisor for the ETA, who is able to actively follow-up and provide ongoing support and guidance to the ETA. The supervisor will work closely with the ETA to support lesson planning, teaching strategies, and professional development throughout the program period. Institutions should have the capacity to integrate the ETA into their community and be willing to assist any placement-related matters. Basic infrastructure to support teaching activities, including classroom space, teaching materials, and data show is required.

كيفية التقديم

The application to host an ETA opens and closes in early June of each year. Interested institutions should follow the steps below during the application period if they wish to host an ETA:

  1. Submit the Fulbright English Teaching Assistant (ETA) Institutional Request online form in early June for the upcoming academic year.
  2. Send via email to us.programs@fulbright.org.jo:

A- Detailed Scope of Work (SOW) for the ETA at your institution, listing their expected duties, expected work hours, and their supervisor at the institution.

B- Share any relevant policies and procedures, such as attendance, dress code, conduct, and expectations, to guide the ETA during their teaching at your institution.

Notes:
  • Applications will only be considered complete once you have filled out the online form and submitted the documents required via email.
  • Applying to host an ETA does not guarantee placement for the upcoming academic year, as the matching process may determine that the available Fulbright ETAs are not a suitable fit for the institution.

إرشادات إضافية

Host institutions are expected to engage an ETA for one academic year (9 months). There is no hosting fee; institutions are only expected to provide a monthly transportation stipend if feasible.

ETAs support English language instruction and work under the supervision of a designated teacher or mentor. They may teach independently only after an initial orientation period and with mutual agreement between the ETA and the host institution.

This is a part-time placement. ETAs work between 15 and 20 hours per week, including in-class teaching, preparation, and related academic activities. ETAs are expected to follow a mutually agreed schedule and maintain regular presence at the host institution. While ETAs are committed to their host institutions, they are also required to participate in mandatory Fulbright orientations, conferences, and administrative processes. ETAs are granted program leave during the program period, which must be approved by the Fulbright Commission in coordination with the host institution.

ETAs are expected to maintain professional conduct, collaborate effectively with institutional staff, participate in required reporting and evaluation processes, and represent the Fulbright Program in a positive manner.

For more details about an ETA's expected role, please see a general position description here.

Application Timeline:

If selected, institutions are notified in July and begin coordination with their matched ETA. ETAs arrive in Jordan in late September and start their placements around the beginning of October.

الأسئلة الشائعة

How many ETAs are placed in Jordan during one academic year?

The number of ETAs varies by year based on funding and demand.

We have applied for an ETA several times without success. How many times can we reapply?

There is no limitation on reapplications. Institutions are encouraged to apply each year until successful because placements every year is based on a detailed matching process, and being unsuccessful does not mean that the institution would not be successful the following year.

We have already hosted an ETA. Can we apply again?

Yes, previous host institutions are encouraged to reapply.

Does the host institution pay salary to the ETA?

Institutions are requested, but not required, to contribute to the ETA's transportation allowance by arrangement with the Fulbright Commission. As volunteers, ETAs may not receive any additional, outside income during their grant period.

Can the ETA teach subjects other than English?

No. ETAs are placed specifically to support English language education and may only assist with English language instruction.

What if our institution has concerns or issues during the grant period?

The Fulbright Commission maintains regular contact with host institutions throughout the year and is available to address any concerns or challenges that arise. Open communication is encouraged to ensure a successful experience for both the ETA and the institution.
