Overview

The Middle East and North Africa Regional Research Program offer awards for lecturing, research or combined lecturing/research for the duration of three to nine months (usually from beginning-August through September the following year).

Up to three grants for research in any academic or professional area in two or more countries of the Middle East or North Africa are awarded.

Support is provided for research projects of historical or contemporary focus, comparative or regional in scope or where data must be collected in several countries. Fieldwork must be conducted in two or more countries of the region for applications to be considered. Projects that involve collaboration with host country colleagues and institutions and that will contribute to cooperation among countries of the region are particularly encouraged. Projects may be undertaken in the following areas of the Middle East and North Africa: Bahrain, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and West Bank.

Eligibility

• U.S. citizenship at the time of application. Permanent resident status is not sufficient.
• A Ph.D. or equivalent professional/terminal degree (including a Master's depending on the field) as appropriate at the time of application. For professionals and artists outside academe, recognized professional standing and substantial professional accomplishments.
• Preference is for candidates with at least 5 years of postdoctoral experience.
  College or university teaching experience at the level and in the field of the proposed lecturing activity as specified in the award description at the time of application.
• Foreign language proficiency as specified in the award description or as required for the completion of the proposed project. Sound physical and mental health.

In addition, applicants should review the following conditions to confirm eligibility:

• Previous Fulbright scholar grantees are eligible to apply only if five years will have elapsed between the ending date of one scholar award and the beginning date of the new scholar award. This rule does not apply if the previous grant was for less than two months.
• Because an objective of the Fulbright Program is to provide an educational exchange experience to those not previously afforded such an opportunity, preference will usually be given to candidates who have not had substantial recent experience in the country to which they are applying. Duty abroad in the Armed Forces of the U.S. is not considered disqualifying.
• Applicants must disclose any prior conviction or current indictment for commission of a felony. Prior conviction or current indictment may result in disqualification.
• Applicants may suggest preferred host institutions; final affiliation will be confirmed or arranged by the Fulbright Commission in Amman.
