As the Fulbright Program celebrates its 80th anniversary, its mission of fostering mutual understanding through educational and cultural exchange remains as relevant today as ever.

For American Fulbright Specialist Katherine Parr, Jordan became far more than a destination for a professional project. It became an opportunity to build meaningful relationships, exchange perspectives, and explore the universal themes that connect people across cultures.

Parr traveled to Jordan to lead a Fulbright Specialist project she designed titled “Entrepreneurship in Fashion Design in Higher Education,” designed to help bridge the gap between creative education and practical business skills. Working with university students, faculty, and leadership, she explored how strategic entrepreneurship, branding, finance, legal, and innovation can help emerging designers transform creativity into sustainable economic opportunity.

The project reflected her broader belief that industries such as fashion can serve not only as creative outlets, but also as powerful tools for entrepreneurship, workforce participation, and economic development.

While the project focused on fashion entrepreneurship, many of the most memorable lessons emerged outside the classroom.

Throughout her time in Jordan, Parr engaged in conversations with students, educators, entrepreneurs, and community members from a wide range of backgrounds. Repeatedly, discussions returned to themes of leadership, opportunity, family, identity, and the evolving role of women in society.

“What struck me most was not our differences,” Parr reflects. “It was how much we shared. Across cultures, women are often navigating many of the same questions about ambition, responsibility, family, purpose, and opportunity.”

Those conversations became one of the defining aspects of her Fulbright experience. They reinforced her belief that international education and cultural exchange is most powerful when it moves beyond formal presentations and becomes genuine dialogue between people seeking to better understand one another.

Her experience also strengthened her appreciation for education as a form of long-term diplomacy.

“As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, I am reminded that one of America's enduring contributions to the world is the spirit of innovation, entrepreneurship, and the open exchange of ideas.” She said, “Programs like Fulbright reflect those values by connecting people across cultures, encouraging mutual learning, and demonstrating that practical knowledge, education, and collaboration remain among the most powerful tools for creating opportunity and strengthening international understanding.”

“Fulbright reminds us that meaningful international relationships are built person by person,” she says. “The most valuable part of my experience was not simply what I taught, but what I learned through the conversations, trust, and perspectives shared with others.”

Today, Parr serves as an international strategic advisor, working across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to develop partnerships that advance entrepreneurship, workforce development, and inclusive economic opportunity. By connecting institutions across disciplines and borders, she helps transform shared ideas into practical collaboration and measurable impact. She credits her Fulbright experience in Jordan with reinforcing her belief that lasting progress is built through international partnership, cultural exchange, and investing in the next generation of leaders—especially women and emerging entrepreneurs. As Fulbright marks eight decades of impact, Parr believes the program’s greatest strength remains its ability to bring people together through curiosity, respect, and shared learning.

“In a time when the world can often feel divided, Fulbright creates space for dialogue, understanding, and human connection,” she reflects. “Those experiences continue shaping how we lead, how we listen, and how we engage with one another long after the program itself ends.”
